We at VCTM believe in building an inclusive math community of students and educators through conversation, shared resources around evidence-based practices, and connections throughout Vermont and beyond.
VCTM will be hosting its annual spring conference on Friday March 21, 2025 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at St. Michael’s College in Colchester, VT. This year's conference theme is Powerful Mathematics. Mathematical power is the know-how and confidence to use math to inform decisions and navigate the demands of daily life – whether personal, professional or civic. Educators can build each of their student’s mathematical power in many ways such as choosing a powerful mathematical curriculum, using evidence-based instruction and assessment or promoting equity and inclusion.
Presentations should align with at least one of the following strands: Powerful Mathematical Content, Evidence-Based Instruction and Assessment, or Equity and Inclusion.

If your proposal is chosen, then the lead presenter's conference fees will be paid.

Designing Lessons that Develop Conceptual Understanding Grant (PK-5)

This grant supports elementary teachers in designing, implementing, and sharing engaging hands-on lessons to support students’ conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts. This grant is particularly intended to support teachers of students who are underrepresented in STEM to create lessons that draw on students’ linguistic and cultural assets. This grant could be used to fund materials, such as manipulatives, mathematics-related children’s literature, etc. The expectation is that the recipient of the grant would share their lessons with other teachers, in their school/district, and beyond.

Association of Teachers of Mathematics in New England 2024 Fall Conference

At the Annual VCTM meeting on Apr. 11, 2024 a mostly complete slate of Board Members and positions was voted on, but we still have some vacancies!
In particular, we are still looking for a representative for Zone 6, which may or may not include these supervisory unions: Hartford, Orange East, Rivendell Interstate, SAU #70, Springfield, White River Valley, Windsor Central, Windsor Northwest, Windsor Southeast.
What does being a Zone Representative (or Board Member) entail? We meet as a full board every other month for about 2 hours, with additional subcommittee meetings as necessary, to share information from around the state and plan our lineup of engaging programming and events. With so much to do, we can always use more help!

At our recent Board Members' Retreat we found ourselves reviewing all the work we've done over the past year to grow and improve in order to better meet the needs and interests of math educators throughout the state. As we did so, it soon became clear that perhaps our mission statement needed a little revision so that it matches our aspirations. After a unanimous vote, we adopted the following updated mission statement:

At our annual board retreat on August 9th, the VCTM Board of Directors proudly drafted and voted in a new mission statement to guide our work for the foreseeable future as an educational non-profit:
to build an inclusive math community of students and educators through conversation, shared resources around evidence-based practices, and connections throughout Vermont and beyond.
To carry out this mission, we then assembled our humble checklist of goals and aspirations for the 2024-25 school year.
The Vermont Council of Teachers of Mathematics, in collaboration with Fellows from the Connecticut Noyce Math Teacher Leaders Program of UCONN, will be presenting a three part online series on Equity in Math Class, Shining Light on the Work. The three online sessions will discuss the three pillars of equitable education in mathematics and will be a combination of lecture and discussion. Participation in the online sessions is FREE thanks to a generous grant from ATMNE. The three online sessions will be held at 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesdays in January, February and March (1/23/24, 2/27/24, and 3/26/24).
