News & Updates

Mark Your Calendars!

In addition to ATMNE in Maine and the VCTM Conference in the spring, we have some other great events coming up this year! In particular:

  • VCTM (Virtual) Fall Annual Meeting
    Oct. 5, 2023 at 5:30 pm

  • VCTM Math Fair returns
Feb. 2024 - more details coming soon!

Welcome back to the School Year!

Have you changed schools or districts? Take a moment to update your profile with your new contact information so you don't miss out on any of these newsletters!

Do you have new colleagues interested in math that are joining you this academic year? Let them know about us (and that membership is still free) and encourage them to join!

Have you thought at all about what you are going to do to promote equity in your classroom this year?

At our annual retreat, the VCTM Board wrapped up our book discussion on Culturally Relevant Leadership in Mathematics Education and challenged ourselves to discuss the prompts presented in the "Vision Casting Protocol" (p. 101) in the book. Namely, we reflected on:

  • "What does an effective mathematics classroom and mathematics lesson look like and sound like to meet the needs of each and every learner?"
  • "What does equitable mathematics instruction look like and sound like?"

This naturally grew into a discussion about the impact our classroom spaces can have on the messages we try to promote. How can we improve that? We can take it one step at a time. For instance, we can start by adding some new wall decor such as this series of free posters from Pearson Publishing

But don't stop there! What else are you thinking of trying out this year in order to be the change you want to see in your classroom?

Opportunities

Tuesday Mathematics Education Webinars (Free) with Prof. Mahesh Sharma

As we expect every child to read fluently, with comprehension, by the end of third grade, we should expect and work diligently with the goal that every child has mastery of numeracy, with understanding, by the end of fourth grade. With proper mastery of numeracy, they can learn mathematics easily, effectively, and efficiently. They will, then, appreciate the reach, power, and beauty of mathematics. Early mathematics is about number concept, number sense and building the brain for numeracy and beyond. It is all about how we make it easier for students to understand and communicate it. Through a systematic way of learning, practicing, and applying knowledge about the number concept, number sense, numeracy, and mathematical way of thinking children have access to higher mathematics.
