"What does it mean to be good at math?" presented by Dr. Lidia Gonzalez
This session will focus on socially acceptable beliefs about what it means to be good at math. These erroneous beliefs help frame how people view aptitude in the discipline, and in doing so they position some people (or types of people) as more capable than others. When individuals internalize these beliefs, they might place themselves outside the group of those that can achieve mathematically, and this is an issue of equity that we should be addressing. We will then move to what teachers can do to challenge the beliefs we as a society have around what it means to be good at math and, by extension, who is good at it.
